brad_riley1
I am left eye dominant, and have used cameras were the advance lever must be in the stand off position to activate the meter. It then hits me square in the middle of the forehead. Do any of the MP, M7 or M6ttl cameras require the advance lever out to meter? thank you
michael_darnton1
Are you asking because you have not yet tried a Leica? I'm left-eyed, and with the viewfinder window being as far off to the left as it possibly could be, and a pretty good stand off on the lever (out so far that it's beyond being a problem), I never had a bit of a issue with it getting in the way
brad_riley1
Michael, I have not been able to try a leica because there is no dealer locally. I ask because of problems I've had in the past with other cameras. I would still be happy to know if the advance lever needs to be out to meter, but it's good to hear that it should not be a problem. thank you
michael_darnton1
It's one of the things that delighted me about Leica M models when I discovered it, having had the same experience as you over the years. I don't know about the metering, having never had one with a meter.
colin jackson
The advance lever position does not affect the metering on my MP.
sw12dz
It does not affect the metering on the M7. The meter is activated by cocking the shutter and then depressing the shutter release slightly.
jtdnyc
As others have said, the position of the advance lever does not affect the functioning of the meter. You should also be aware that Leica makes a bottom-mounted mechanical accessory winder, the Leicavit, which is especially useful for left-eye-dominant shooters. With the Leicavit you could not only meter but also shoot and wind on without moving the camera or poking yourself in the right eye. You could also use the Leica Winder, which requires batteries. john_elder1
Just hold the camera upside down. The viewfunder will be in the lower right hand corner, convenient for left eye dominance. Use left hand to advance film.
mike dixon
I'm also left-eye dominant, but my nose is big enough that I have to hold the camera at such an angle to my face that I can still fit the wind lever and my thumb in without poking myself in the eye. david_maxwell2
As suggested above - a Leicavit or an equally good alternative a Rapidwinder - http://www.rapidwinder.com/ - will help with the issue of left-eyed viewing. On the rapidwinder site Tom A. talks about these issues and more
Rob F.
The pivoting plastic piece on Leicas subsequent to the M2 and M3 improves the amount of clearance for left-eyed shooting. And if you have, or buy, an M2 or M3, the winding lever can be replaced with the pivoting type. But you don't have to extend the lever to use the meter on metered Ms.
samoksner
When you cock the shutter however, the lever will hit you straight in the eye, if you have the money, i would look at a rapidwinder from Tom Abrahamson. The device attaches on the bottom of the camera and winds the film and shutter mechanism by pulling on a vertical lever that runs horizontally under the camera. george_shihanian
Ther was one Leica M body camera that had the meter "on" circuit connected to the wind on lever and it was the CL. It had to be "out' about 5 degrees.
