dohmy_forgetful
When I take a picture, I can review it in the monitor, right? Well, white part of the picture keeps blinking in the monitor. Black-white-black-white. It's quite annoying and didn't do this when I first got it. I must've done something in the setting menu or something, but I got NO idea how I did it. Anyone? Also I took some pictures and noticed a smudge (more like a blurred smudge - yeah everything is blurred with me...). I know I have to clean it. Is it easy? Should I go to a camera shop? I'm such a klutz I'm afraid ruining my precious camera. :-( Mae P.S. I will get some info booklet as so many of you have suggested after this brouhaha. I promise! jonsjons
your camera is showing you the blown-out highlights in the image. to get rid of this, just press up or down on the multi selector button (the round one on the rear next to the lcd) several times until you reach the normal display mode. b_jordan_munsayac
Mae, Sorry I answered this on your original thread about the "black-white-black-white" flashing, before I saw this one. Both Robert and Jonathan are correct. http://www.photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00QZrO In regard to the smudge or fingerprint on your lens, I would check the lens first if your camera is new I would find it hard to believe you have dust on your sensor already. Dust on your sensor will normally look like black specs on your image, and Roberts second link is a great tutorial on how to clean it. Again I would recommend reading your manual completely, I was always the type who would jump in without doing so, I didn't read my manual until a year after my camera and realized how much information I missed out on. Nikon goes so far as to even include basic camera concepts in the manual. So before you pick up any other material I would read the manual first. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your first images! Have fun! -B
albertdarmali
The fist thing that I wondered when I got my D80 was why the heck when I shake the camera, it produces this sound like a tiny screw is loose and rolling around inside the camera? If you haven't gotten the answer for this yet, I bet it would be your next question. And this is not mentioned in the manual too (I think they should). The rolling thing is not a loose screw or faulty camera but the sensor orientation system. So don't worry your camera is not broken. :)
adrian_ng
Albert, Just curious, why would you shake your camera in the first place?
graham_marsden
Hi Mae. Don't worry about asking questions ! Could I recommend that you download http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d80/users-guide/index.htm as a good free user guide. Ken can be controversial but, as a fellow D80 owner I find his guide very helpful. He doesn't object to you printing a copy for your own use. ..<IMG SRC="http://mars.walagata.com/w/radiogandy/Icons/photo_0.gif">
dohmy_forgetful
Thanks guys. You are all so helpful! I was going to get some cleaning kit and do it myself (or at least try to learn it). When I went to buy one (at Ritz Camera), I was told to send it in for cleaning. There is a dust particle on sensor, they said... They blew the air a few times but it didn't go away. They didn't have the cleaning kit there (for sale) and it takes 2- 4 weeks and $100, so I'll stop by at another place like Adorama and see what happens. I will read the manual more thoroughly. Reading those small prints make me dizzy though! M.
albertdarmali
Adrian, shaking camera regularly will improve your composition skills. Trust me.
jim mucklin
Dust on the sensor is not going to give you a "blurred" picture. Is it blurred on the rear display when viewing the shot or is it blurred when you print a photograph. <p/> Go to <a href= http://www.copperhillimages.com/index.php?pr=Tutorials/>Copperhill</a> it will explain all how how to take a shot and see if you have dust on your sensor. If you do buy a brush and a cleaning kit the one with the eclipse fluid and pads for under a $100 and clean your own sensor forever or get ready to drop a $50 and some time when you send it in to be cleaned. Take a cleaning cloth and wipe off the lcd and the lenses first. Did you buy this camera used? But really you got to read the manual even if it gives you a headache unless you want to just put it on P and point and shoot.
dohmy_forgetful
My description might've been unclear (happens a lot!). Blurred pictures and dust on sensor are 2 separate issues. The dot I see on every picture is not very conspicuous. It's rather a "blurred" spot on every picture. That's what I meant... My camera is brand new or it should be brand new. I cleaned the lens and LCD and the shop guy said the dust particle (visible to him) is on sensor...
