john_markanich
As fate would have it I need more external storage before I need a new computer. Since the future seems aimed towards 64 bit will the currently available external drives (like a Western Digital Passport) be compatible with this higher-bit processing? zafar1
yes. The hard-disk technology is independent of 32bit/64-bit. All you need to be concerned about is interface. External disks use either USB2 or Firewire. Both will continue to be supported for a long time to come. Internal disks use either IDE (wide cable) or SATA/eSATA (smaller cable). IDE drives are on their way out with SATA/eSATA being used in all new computers.
steven_clark
In some fashion or another hard disks made the shift to higher bit addressing long ago. Most recent hard disks are already about 57-bit in their addressing scheme.
