Where is picture lake located?

Hi there,

 

I will visit Seattle area soon and would like to shoot Mt. Shuksan relfected in

Picture Lake.

 

Can someone tell me where Picture Lake is located, or how to get to it from

Seattle?

It's at Mt. Baker in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie Nat'l Forest. Take I-5 NORTH to Bellingham (which is about 85 mi north of Seattle), take Exit 255 EAST (Mt. Baker Hwy, also known as WA 542). It's about an hour's drive from B'ham. You can't miss Picture Lake because it's well-marked and there is a loop road around it. Also, there is a visitor's center at Heather Meadows. Call them to find out the best time of day for the Mt. Shuksan reflection in Picture Lake. Hope this helps. Enjoy your visit.

Lake. Best advise is either get there early or stay late for sunrise or sunset. Often the light

washes Mt. Baker out (partly evident in my photo as we got there too late in the morning).

directions are already posted, just follow highway 542 east all the way to the Mt. Baker recreational area. you can't miss the lake, you have to drive past it to get to the visitors' center. best time is late afternoon or evening, unless you can get there befor dawn. once the sun breaks the horizon, it will washout you photo completely.

this one was taken about 7:30, before the "alpenglow" started.

if you want to catch the alpenglow, you have to be there a little before sunset, and wait. it only lasts about 3-5 minutes, then the light goes and the mountain turns dark gray and dull white...

I was surprised at how tiny Picture Lake is. The name is deceptive because its really just a small pond. But it certainly does wonders for the view of Mt. Shuksan. It really is a spectacular sight.
