john_langley2
Who and where are the Big retailers for photo SLR equipment , downtown/central or near the Thames - Thanks - john
BernardMiller
Umm, London doesn't exactly have a downtown, in the American sense. So "central" would probably be a more accurate way to go about things. The two main high-street retailers are Jessops and Jacobs, and they (particularly the former) have numerous branches scattered about the city including stores opposite each other on New Oxford Street. Which is about as central as you can get. Calumet also has a few branches, including on Drummond Street near Euston Station and on Wardour Street in Soho. It caters more towards professionals, and is where I usually shop instead of the first two. There are also a number of very good independent retailers, many of which are a bit more specialised. david_henderson
Just so you know, the most price competitive and highest volume camera retailers, and quite possibly those most likely to be "in stock" on any particular item in ther UK are not in town centres. They are typically in areas where it is much cheaper to do business, and do much of their trade on the phone or internet. There is nothing in London that can remotely compare with B&H in NYC for example. Of the outlets mentioned I'd try Calumet first- Drummond Street is not on the tourist track and there isn't much else you're going to want to do round there, but its probably the only UK camera retailer that I would and have bought from recently. Jessops have been a poor bunch for years and Jacob's main appeal is that they aren't Jessops. I'd get a magazine or two when I got here- most of the retailers advertise in some form. There are a few decent specialists left such as Grays of Westminster (Nikon) near Vauxhall Bridge Road- but the pattern of trade here has moved inexorably against the town centre retailer and will continue to do so for a while yet. john_langley2
David - By mentioning B & H ,which I have had the pleasure of visiting, you have put my question into absolute clarity. I thank you for your lengthy and informative response . john
dogtired
Just to second the motion. I would stay away from Jacobs and Jessops. The other stores mentioned would be a better choice. By the sounds of this conversation, I am a little disappointed I did not get to visit B&H when in NYC. Maybe next time. (Depending on the strength, or weakness of the pound). BernardMiller
Hi, Adrian! Heh, heh, you will definitely enjoy a visit to B&H. It's like a visit to Santa's toy shop for photographers!
