catherine_constantinou
Hi Camera Enthusiasts I wonder if you might advise on the following: I have a Nikon Series E 28mm F/1:2.8 (2091581). I have checked on: http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/serialno.html#20 and it shows as: E 28/2.8 Series E chrome ring 155g 3+ 1940001 1940121 - 2128606 May81 - 1985 188606 Does this mean it is a AI, AIS or neither? Thank you, Catherine
ed farmer - mount laurel,
I believe that they Series E 50 is an AIS lens. I used one on my F4 for years in all exposure modes and never noticed any problems. Ed
leif_goodwin8
The first version (all black) is AI. Not sure about the second, which you have.
joe_a2
Catherine.... All the Series E lenses are AIS. All AIS lenses are also AI.
ShunCheung
As Michael Freeman pointed out to me, the 50mm/f1.8 Series E lens my father bought with his EM back in 1979 is an AI-S lens, although Nikon did not officially introduce AI-S lenses and the term until 1981. When I visited my dad last Christmas, I checked his lens and it is indeed an AI-S. Since that 50mm/f1.8 is one of the earliest Series E lenses, I would assume that all Series E lenses are AI-S as Joe points out. Unless you need to use the lens on an FA for the S or P mode, there really isn't a whole lot of difference between AI and AI-S in general. Specific lenses may have a different design in AI and AI-S. leif_goodwin8
Looks like Peter Braczko's Nikon Pocket Book has an error.
ShunCheung
Leif, as I mentioned earlier, since AI-S lenses were not officially introduced until 1981, I was very surprsied to learn that the Series E lens my dad bought in 1979 is actually AI-S and meets all AI-S specifications. frank_field
All Series E lenses are AI-S mounts.
pge
Catherine Just for future reference the bunny ears on ai and ais lenses have a hole in each ear, whereas non-ai lenses have solid bunny ears. Phil
graham_line
Except that none of the Series E lenses were supplied with 'bunny ears'
