randmcnatt
Probably the Metz 58, which pumps out an ISO100 guide number of 190 (feet), but you should note that it's not even a half-stop brighter than the old Vivitar 283/285. Almost all the high-end units have about the same guide numbers. It's a matter of physics and packaging: you can pack just so much power into a shoe-mount flash without ripping the hotshoe right off the camera. frank_skomial
Metz rates flashes at 105 mm lens angle of coverage, while some other vendors, e.g. Nikon, rate at 35 mm lens angle, thus one must be comparing Guide Numbers at the same field angle coverage. Nikon SB-800 at 105 and same ISO is GN 184. Nikon new SB-900 at 105 is 190, but at the allowed auto zoom 200 mm the guide number could be much higher, though details about the new flash are not yet available. christopher hartt dallas
The Canon 580EX2 is GN 190, Metz is 190 or 192 (I've seen both listed), but not enough difference to make a decision based on power alone.
