slideshow software

I use ACDSee Pro 2 for 95% of my post-production, image management, and marketing, and Photoshop CS3 only for critical retouching. It's only $130 US (it's a Canadian product), and for me, it beats Adobe Lightroom and everything else.

As for slideshows, you can create a self-contained .exe slideshow file (or even a .swf flash file) of a series of photos with various transitions and timing (fade is the best). I create one of these for each wedding I shoot, using about 30 of the best shots, and keep these on the desktop of my laptop. I just double-click one and it launches full-screen. Very easy to show to potential clients.

I use my laptop with ACDSee Pro 2 at receptions too. I'll download the images from the day while everyone is eating, select about 50 or 100 just by "tagging" (clicking a checkbox on the thumbnail) and hit "Auto SlideShow". They'll run full-screen continuously. Guest gather around and ooh and ahh over the pictures and it really gets them excited about the photography. Great marketing tool.

It's also an excellent RAW converter and has the BEST most precise shadow-highlight tool I've ever seen.

You can dowload it and demo for free, and purchase it right over the internet from anywhere in the world.

This might not help you as you are talking about a program, but for an HTML based one which would be good for

clients that you can't see for a bit you could use the one below.

I use a very inexpensive and highly modifiable slideshow called ThumbGallery for my HTML site. Click on my name

above and then go to my site to see if you like it. Go to the company's site and you can see how different mine

looks from theirs. That modification took only about 10 minutes and their site explains exactly how to do it.

Ah, guilty as charged Vince. I do normally look on the search function but somehow didn't think to this time!

Amanda - I presume emotion media produce the DVD for you rather than allowing me to do it myself and burn copies?

Steve - I'm looking for something cheaper than $130 as I'm thinking of buying a MacBook and switching over in a few months time. Will still keep a PC and run both - I think.

Yes, Marten, if you're buying a Macbook, you won't have much money left over for software, so I see your dilemma ;-)

And, ACDSee is not available for the Mac, but would run fine on your PC. I'm not sure why you'd want a Mac - they cost way more, have less software options, and don't even have a right mouse button. Oh well, your choice.

Best!

ProSelect from Time Exposure is the best IMHO. It's geard towards studios and perfect for the consultative sell. It will pay for itself after your first showing. It's amazing, too, to hook your laptop up to a 50" LCD and show your slideshow to your clients using ProSelect, the impressions are stunning!

For completeness, I'll add these options:

<p>

Microsoft Photo Story 3 (free)<br>

<a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.mspx"

target="_blank">http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.mspx</a><br>

Optional MP3/WAV soundtracks.<br>

I like the "Ken Burns"-style transitions.<br>

Export as WMV at various resolutions, or buy the Sonic plug-in to burn to DVD (with option to include the image files

on the DVD).

<p>

Also, irfanview (freeware) from <a href="http://www.irfanview.com" target="_blank">http://www.irfanview.com</a><br>

You can export the slideshow as EXE or burn to CD.

<p>

Also, built into XP is "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer". Just right-click on an image in the folder you want to view

and then click "Open with... Windows Picture and Fax Viewer"

Oh, one more I've played with...<br>

<a href="http://www.slide.com" target="_blank">http://www.slide.com</a>

<p>

Like youtube for slideshows... They'll host up to 50 images per slideshow. You can also embed the viewer in your webpage or e-mail the slide.com link. IMHO, the slide.com shows are OK without any of their bells and whistles and special effects, but probably far from sufficient for formal, professional events.

Steve - good point. I'm not looking for flash slideshow for my website. This last week illustrates my needs - I shot one wedding, one school prom and a weeks mission with churches. So, a slideshow for a wedding needs to be classy and Amandas recomendation might suit nicely.

For the prom we photograph all the youngsters arriving in their limos and download to a laptop and project the photos using Piccasso which works very well and generates lots of interest (except I can't get it to loop continiously). I also need to burn a DVD for the school to play continiously on a large moniter in the school reception (friend burned this for me with Sho Pro Gold). I may get more bookings/orders from this so I need to add logo and reference numbers. Disc packaging isn't too important. BTW we print on site with Dye Sub printer.

The church mission people wanted a slideshow to project on a large screen at the final meeting. The criteria here is speed and ease of use. May also want to burn extra copies for momentoes for future events.

Am I asking too much?

The program I use and endorse is FotoMagico. It is a very popular slideshow program for the Mac. With it you can

create one show and render it for the web, iPods, iTunes, YouTube, iPhone, screen saver, standalone player and of

course burn it to a DVD. You can even export the show in HD and if you have a BluRay burner you can create a show in

Blu Ray. What makes the software so versatile and popular is that it renders the video using full resolution image files

so the quality is there regardless of how you want to export/render the show. It uses and renders in the QT H.264 HD

codec.

I assist in their marketing hers in the states and also act as technical support. You can view the information and

download a demo version through my site portal:

Hope that helps.
