kristin.marvin
I know someone who is upgrading and has offered to sell me his Canon EF 100-300 mm f/4.5-5.6 USM Lens and his Cannon 28-105 lens (neither are IS) with hoods and UV filters for $500/all. Is this a good deal? I read an article that said that the pair was a good combo to have. I know this person personally and I don't want to rip him off and don't think he would do that to me, either, but just figured I'd check. Lenses are in good condition- he bought them for his Digital Rebel XTi (which I have) and is upgrading and no longer needs these lenses. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! richard_crowe4
NOT A GOOD DEAL... The 28-105mm is not a bad lens but, it is certainly not a great lens (especially on a 1.6x format camera) and the value is not there. The 100-300mm lens is not really a good lens http://photography.search.ebay.com/28-105mm_Auto-Focus_W0QQa10244ZQ2d24QQa14ZQ2d24QQa25563ZQ2d24QQa41840ZQ2d24QQa41842ZQ2d24QQa42078ZQ2d24QQalistZa25563Q2ca41840Q2ca14Q2ca42078Q2ca41842Q2ca10244QQcatrefZC6QQcoactionZcompareQQcoentrypageZsearchQQcopagenumZ1QQdfspZ32QQfposZQ5AIPQ2fPostalQQfromZR2QQfsooZ2QQfsopZ32QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQgcsZ1826QQpf_queryZ28Q2d105mmQQpfidZ2595QQpfmodeZ1QQreqtypeZ2QQsabfmtsZ1QQsacatZ4687QQsadisZ200QQsargnZQ2d1QQsaslcZ2QQsatitleZ28Q2d105mmQQsbrftogZ1QQsofocusZbs http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&dfsp=32&catref=C6&from=R2&satitle=100-300mm+f%2F4.5-5.6&sacat=4687%26catref%3DC6&a25563=-24&a42078=-24&a41840=-24&a14=-24&a41842=-24&a10244=-24&alist=a25563%2Ca41840%2Ca14%2Ca42078%2Ca41842%2Ca10244&pfmode=1&reqtype=1&gcs=1826&pfid=2595&pf_query=100-300mm+f%2F4.5-5.6&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=ZIP%2FPostal&sabfmts=1&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=32%26fsoo%3D2&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search You would probably be better off getting a new 18-55mm IS ($170 at B&H) lens and a 55-250mm IS lens ($279 at B&H). These lenses would give you reasonable image quality and would not cost an arm and a leg. However, if you wanted better imagery and could afford a few bucks more than $500, look into a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 ($419 at B&H) and a 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS ($529 at B&H) this combination would give you lots of versatility and darn good imagery. kristin.marvin
Thank you so much!! I was uneasy about it and am glad I didn't purchase. Think I will hold out for something else. :)
kristin.marvin
I think I am going to go with your first suggestion, the 55-250 mm. The reviews seem great and since I am just an avid amateur, I don't think I need anything too fancy! The one you suggested gives me room to be creative without breaking my bank! kristin.marvin
By the way, I looked at your webpage (linked through your profile here) and you have some truly amazing photos. I only looked at your travel section, but the lighting in Carlsbad Caverns was beautiful, and I very much liked the Mexico series as well... (I am going to Puerto Vallarta in less than a month and can't wait to see what I am able to capture!) :)
