50 Summicron (DR & regular) on .58 viewfinder and other dillemas

Recommended Posts

Although it's such a controversial issue on this forum, I cannot

overstate my enthusiasm for the new MP. I will get one, and I bet

it will be the last film camera I ever buy.

The dillema I face now is deciding which magnification, the .58

or the .72. I must admit that I'm pretty drawn to the black paint on

the latter, but, then again, my principle lens is the 35 Summilux

ASPH and I wear glasses.

My other lens is a 90 Tele-Elmarit, which I am not that attached

to. I know that many tout the 35/90 travel combo, and it looks

good on paper and all, but I bet I haven't shot 36 exposures with

it in the year and a half. (Which is not to say that it's not a good

lens--I love it's size, the way it feels and handles, and the

images it produces.) That said, I'm tempted to trade it for a 50

Summicron, which I'm sure would see a good deal of use. I

guess what I want to know is:

How are the 50 framelines on a .58 body? I've been using a .72

M6TTL and have never looked through a low-mag viewfinder.

I've seen the example in the Leica publications and website, but

it doesn't really help.

What about a 50 Dual Range Summicron? (Seems like a neat

lens to pair up with a chrome MP.) Will the .58 magnifcation

affect the focusing for DR? Anyone use this combo?

That has me thinking about the possibility of a 28 Cron/50 DR

Cron combo for the MP. (At the expense of the 35 Lux ASPH of

course.) I could see how that could be an ideal kit for me, but I'd

be constantly changing lenses. Another dillema altogether, and

one I'll have to decide for myself. Not going to lose any sleep

about it--not tonight at least.

Best,

Luke Dunlap

What about the newly issued 50 Jahre Summicron, the retro 50/2. Looks like a perfect match for a chrome MP.

If you wear glasses and the 35 is your main lens I would go for the .58. The illustrations on the Leica website are deceiving. You have to see it in person. I too wear glasses and have a .58. But I'm fortunate to have a .72 so that camera now keeps the 50.
