Canon 450D with 24-105mm L

Hi,

I love the quality of the 24-105 L lens. The L series of lens must be the

sharpest on the market. I have used this lens on a 5D..but to buy a 5D and the

lens is really stretching my budget.

There are lots of full 12 MP JPG's on the net of the 5D 24-105mm. But I have

yet to see any of the 450D with the 24-105mm.

Does anybody know of a link..or have you any first hand experience yourself?

Bascially if I can get the clarity and sharpness of the 5D but using the 450D.

That would make my day.

..and yes..I of course know the 5D is full frame e.t.c.

I know of a few people that use it on a 40D or 1.6 crop camera. I think the only real

difference will be it will be a little long on the wide end. So if 38 - 160 ish works for you

its a great lens.

24mm isn't wide enough on a crop camera like the 450D. es, I know this is a personal preference, but my personal preference just happens to be right on this issue. :)

The 17-55 f/2.8 IS would be a better choice for most (but not all) of us.

Hi,

http://www.pbase.com/cameras/canon/ef_24-105_4l_is_usm

On pbase.com you can view a lot of pictures taken with the 24-105. Quite a few of them are taken on a crop camera. And a lot of those look great.

Unless you push the camera lens combination to it's limits or make 1 meter long prints you'll probably be very happy with the 450D&24-105 combination.

And whether 24mm is wide enough for you, you'll just have to try that for yourself. Loan or rent is an option, buying (second hand?) and selling is another. If you use it for longer than two weeks buying and selling is cheaper than renting in most cases.

The difference between 24-105 and 17-55 is a matter of taste. They handle different and the pictures look slightly different. (The 24-105 pictures that I see tend to be slightly more vivid and the 17-55 pictures that I see look more real.)

Regards,

Matthijs.

<p>I use Pixel-Peeper for that, which acts as an overlay to Flickr and allows you to

select any combination of lens, camera, aperture, zoom, etc.

Hope this helps. I use that lens on my 40D and it is a great combination. Its a very

usable focal range to walk-around with in my opinion.

I use the 24-105 on both 5D and 40D bodies. The 5D does give slightly higher IQ, but i

need to print at A4 size to see a significant difference. The big difference is that the

5D makes the lens much more useful (for me) at the lower end. For your reference,

the Photozone website tests all Canon lenses on cropping bodies, and give pretty

objective reviews, including MTF, CA, vignetting and distortion charts. They're at http://www.photozone.de/

I am planning on getting the 24-105 for my 40D. But for me I rarely shoot wider then 28

so I don't see it as a problem. For the 10% of the time I need to go wider I plan on

getting a Tokina 11-16 or 12-24. ( or something in this range )
