raychang
I was walking my dogs Saturday morning when I spotted this blue heron trying to carry off a fish. I quickly turned on my Canon DRebel (300D) and took a picture of it. Before I could take another shot, the bird got startled and flew a few yards before it dropped the fish back into the river. It took me the next10 minutes in the mud to retrieve the wounded fish, turned out the fish (about a foot and a half long) was rather tasty. Does anyone know what kind of fish this is? It all happened in Exeter, NH. I have had my DRebel for 4.5 years, I just wish it could be a little speedier in operation<div></div>

de_isaacs
something here points to the updated saying about "a Fish in the hand worth more than . . ." but as it is a shame (and a good laugh) to slide that by the bird - I guess I will abandon that tail (tale?) for another time! markci
I'm pretty sure it's a New England mudsnapper. Unless it's prepared by an expert it's deadly poison, but takes exactly seven days to kill.
william_downer
head looks like that of a piscivore, not a bottom feeder. I thought it might be a pickerel, but the dorsal fin may be too far foreward. Guess we need a fisherman from nh to help us out.
dan_fromm2
Sucker, William, not a piscivore. Look again.
william_downer
you are right Dan. i thought a very dark leaf was part of the head contour. the head is actually blunted and the low lying pectoral fins are c/w a sucker.
