Peter_in_PA
It is compatible with your camera. It will mount fine. It will NOT auto-focus, but all metering will work. If you're happy focusing manually, it will be great. If you must have auto-focus with that camera, there is currently nothing you can buy in a fixed fast 50mm length. You might like the 30mm f1.4 from Sigma, which is, from all accounts, a great match with that camera.
Apurva Madia
This lens will not autofocus on D40x.
carl_becker2
For Nikkor lenses only AF-S will be auto focus compatible for the D40 or D60 bodies. Sigma has HSM, not sure about others.

eric_arnold
you may want to wait for the sigma 50/1.4 to be released, or alternately, pick up a sigma 30/1.4, which is more useful on DX than a 50mm anyway. unfortunately, both lenses cost 4x as much as the 50/1.8, but that's part of the hidden cost of the entry-level nikon DSLRS. shuo_zhao
The Sigma 30 1.4 is a good lens. But its neither cheap like the 50 1.8 Nikkor, nor useful as a portrait lens.
catrike
It's really easy to manually focus and a great macro lens with an extension tube. I use mine with my D40 all the time.
