david_byrde
What are my options for tethered shooting with both the D200 and D300? Am I limited to Nikon Capture (??) with the D300? How about the D200? Any recent workarounds (kludges) found for either camera? Workarounds that are fast enough? I don't want to spend a bunch of money on new software if it's not needed, but if I have to I guess that's the way. Any and all solutions...please and thanks. ian_murren
if you have OSX, the built in image capture app will give you the basic camera control, take a picture and auto show a preview. You have to have your camera set to PTP USB mode for this to work. It's not a great option, but it's free.
samoksner
Nikon capture can control both of the cameras, however, i don't know if you can control both at once from the same computer. I don't know of any other software that will let you control the cameras, the D300 will do it wirelessly (it has wi-fi) but i have no idea how that works. david_byrde
I don't need to run them at the same time. Just want to get the setup straight for both of them. I've been reading up on Nikon Camera Control for tethering and everybody says it's EXtremely slow...Has this problem been solved?? I've seen plenty of other cameras generate previews very quickly. Someone said it's taking Camera Control on a d300 something 15 to 20 seconds to get a file up..?? There has to be a smooth process for this, i can't believe Nikon would cripple this aspect of their upper end cameras. I've heard Bibble, Capture One etc all work good. Rene11664880918
As said before, OSX with Aperture can do that or Nikon Camera Control Pro. I tried Camera Control Pro before with a D80 and it doesn't take that long to take or download and show the picture. Maybe just a couple of seconds. I tried it on a Mac with OSX maybe if you try it in a PC or an older computer it might take longer depending on the OS. Rene'
victor_virtucio
To shoot the D200 tethered, Nikon Capture Control v. 4.4.2 works fine. It takes 2-3 seconds per FINE jpg, maybe twice as long for RAW. To shoot the D300 tethered, you'll need Camera Control Pro, which is the cheapest but efficient software for PC users.
david_byrde
I'm on a Mac 10.4.11 g5 dual. Not interested in buying Aperture From what I've read, Camera control pro with the d300 is pretty slow. I guess I'm looking for some feedback on that from someone who's used CCP with the d300. Ian, how fast is Image Capture, the Mac utility? I guess I'll give it a shot tomorrow. ian_murren
if all your looking for is a preview your best bet might be a small monitor connected to your video out. it's the fastest way. Look for a LCD with a composite video in. I did a quick search on newegg and found a 15" for $199, you can probably do better, portable DVD players also sometimes have video in ports. For image capture to work for you, you really need to do some automator or apple scripting. Otherwise you have to keep hitting download on the machine. Shoot, you said 10.4.11 didnt you, this is a leopard only thing i think.
raymond_lowe
I wanted to know exactly this and couldn't find a free way so I wrote my own script to shoot tethered for my d40, and now I have a d300 and it works fine for that too. You can get if from my blog if you are still interested. It's here: <a href="http://www.diyphotobits.com/2008/05/23/free-tethered-shooting-script-for- nikon/">http://www.diyphotobits.com/2008/05/23/free-tethered-shooting-script-for-nikon/</a> <p> This is for Windows PC and you need XP SP2 at least for the Microsoft WIA library to work. I only got it working a few weeks ago and haven't had much chance to play with it as I've been so busy but so far I'm finding it fun to shoot tethered. <p> Oh yeah, and my script is NOT a subsitute for Nikon CameraContol Pro - it's just a quick hack for hobby fun. :) <p> My hardest problem was finding a long enough usb cable! In the end I used an extender -- but I bought several before I got one that worked properly, the cheap ones didn't work with a camera even though they were ok for something like a mouse. raymond_lowe
I actually just rewrote this to have a GUI and stuff like a preview window. Still no PC control of shutter speed or aperture but I think I can do that next. <a href=http://www.diyphotobits.com/2008/10/16/diyphotobitscom-camera-control- 10/>http://www.diyphotobits.com/2008/10/16/diyphotobitscom-camera-control-10/</a> I'd love to have comments! It's free but Windows only, sorry.
alex_raskin
<p>Raymond, I'm actually looking for the software that does control <strong>multiple</strong> cameras simultaneously :)</p> <p>Kind of like Breeze systems for Canons:</p> <p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.breezesys.com/MultiCamera/index.htm" target="_blank">http://www.breezesys.com/MultiCamera/index.htm </a></p> <p>...but I need it for my six <strong>Nikon D40x</strong> .</p> <p>I need to control my D40x's simultaneously to take photos (manual mode), and hopefully to download/label the images taken to PC.<br /> <br /> This is for a simpler version of the bullet-time rig I'm making.<br /> <br /> I wonder, maybe you can give me some pointers on how to DIY the multiple camera control/image management? Or maybe you already have something like that?<br /> <br /> Thanks.<br /> <br /> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.breezesys.com/MultiCamera/index.htm" target="_blank"></a></p>
alcyon
<p>Hi Raymond,<br> First, a big thank you for developing that bit of software. Very, very helpful.<br> I'm testing it today for the first time with my D300. It's working fine but only in JPEG. I cannot preview .tif or .nef. <br> Am I doing something wrong? Have I missed something?<br> Thanks in advance<br> Jean-Francois Guignard</p>
alcyon
<p>Hi Raymond,<br> Disregard my last comment.<br> Sorry, I jumped the gun and should have clicked on the WHY before...<br> Thanks.<br> Jean-Francois Guignard</p>
