Strobonar 52 A - Insensitive?

I have a Strobonar 52A which I might use if I can get it to work. I am trying to

trigger it with the built in flash on my Nikon D80. If I aim the D80 directly at

the sync trigger mirror on the popup, it fires OK. Anything off a direct aim, it

will not fire at all. Has age claimed it, or am I missing something?

I can not get any strobes to sync with a slave to either digital camera. All the slaves work properly.

 

I had a P&S and put the flash on a bracket and hung the slave intront of the camera flash. That did work. At a decent distance like 3/10 feet, they don`t work and I can`t figure out why.
