alex_m7
I was wondering if a regular size B+W MRC UV-Haze filter would be fine for the Nikon 18-200mm VR. I read the Rockwell review of this lens and he says that a wide angle filter will not be needed. Please correct me if Im wrong. What about the slim filters? Do they have any real advantages? jimstrutz
The slim filters are the ones designed for wide angel lenses. They are less likely to vignette since they don't extend so far forward of the lens front. You shouldn't need one for the 18-200 VR, it's not all that wide. Actually a lot of new 12-xxmm lenses don't even need the slim/wide filters. What a lot of slim filters don't have are filter threads on the front of the filter, so you can't stack them. Not that that's a good idea anyway, but the standard filters do have the threads.
dave_l.
Part of the answer depends on whether or not you are going to use 77mm filters with a 72mm-77mm step up ring. I've been using this set-up (albeit only for a few months) and I've noticed some vignetting with a standard B&W 77mm circular polarizer. If you are going to be using 72mm filters I don't think you'll need slim filters.
alex_m7
Thank you for your responses. One more thing. What about the extra wide (86mm front) filters. What exactly are their advantages?
