alan_vanderhaegen
I am looking for a wide angle lens for my 40D. I have narrowed it down to 5 lenses but I'm confused as to the difference between: Tokina 12mm-24mm f/4 pro DX AF and Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X Pro DX. Next: Tokina 10mm-17mm f/3.5-4.5 DX AF and Tokina 10-17 f/3.5-4.5 AT-X DX AF.Another lens I saw is the Tamron SP AF 11-12mm f/4.5-5.6 Di II LD. Can someone shed some light on this? I will not consider Sigma. Thanks in advance. Alan
colinsouthern
"I will not consider Sigma." Personally, I wouldn't consider Tokina or Tamron either. Why not the Canon EF-S 10-22?
alexdi
Forget the Tamron. The Tokina 10-17 is a fisheye, so don't choose it unless that's what you want. The Tokina 12-24 is an excellent lens with a solid build, but the gulf between 10mm and 12mm is significant. Canon's 10-22 is the best ultrawide for the Canon mount. If the cost is unreasonable and the Sigma 10-20 isn't an option, the Tokina is the best alternative.
alan_vanderhaegen
Hi Colin, yeah, you're probably right. I have been disapointed with third paty lenses. Unfortunately the Canon EF-S 10-22 is out of stock at Amazon. I'll just have to be patient and that will pay off in the long run. Cheers, Alan

james_gu
Blah...got to this a bit too late. The Tokina 12-24 actually has very favourable reviews. Moreover, isn't it a full-frame lens, unlike the other listed here? Anyway, the Canon lens is very good choice!
jonny_mac
James, The Tokina 12-24 can "mount" on a FF camera, but it is meant for crop cameras and thus unless you crop your FF picture you will have distortion.
chris_laudermilk
Not distortion, vignetting. Having used both the Tokina & Canon, IMHO the two are equals as far as the final image goes. You just have to decide if the 10-12mm range is worth $100-150. Both are excellent lenses.
