greg s
Hi, I have a Nikon 500mm f/4 AF-I and am being asked if there is a built-in protective front filter on the lens. As I understand, it would have been there when the lens was brand new. Is there a way to tell if that filter is still there, or if the ED lens element itself is exposed? I always assumed there was no protective front filter, but then I also would not know how to add a filter (no threads to screw one in as there was on my o;d 600mm f/5.6 AIS). Here is a link to photos of the lens, in case that is of any help. http://www.pbase.com/coraltown/nikon_500mm Thanks, -Greg-
raymond bradlau
The glass on the front end of the lens is actually there for protection, the real front element is behind it. Ray
greg s
I looked at the front and the glass is flat, so I believe that the protective front filter is in place as it should be. I had been avoiding cleaning it with lens tissue as I had thought it was the actual front lens element.
eajames
"Is there a way to tell if that filter is still there..." One way to do this Greg is to jerk other people around - for example: sending emails to others who are selling the lens; suggesting that you are interesting in purchasing their lens; and then dropping the matter all together once you troll/spam an answer out of them. greg s
Eric, The deal fell through due to buyer being super picky about shipping (3-day special UPS with a mint under the pillow) and wanting me to pay a share of unnecessary costs. I initially made a mistake of saying I would help with the cost, but that will never happen again. I did learn something though, and have pursued finding a shipping box... an item that needs to be in hand before posting an ad for an item such as this. -g-
