buzz_meade
I'm feeling I need something new. I have a D80 right now along with lens 18- 55mm, 28-80mm, 50mm and 55-200mm. Example of my work: http://gumballzeta.com/photoweb3.jpg I shoot mainly models and portraits, but I am moving into more outdoor nature scenes, and I'm shooting a few weddings in the fall. Is there a lens that might work well for those two new "subjects" as well as what I currently shoot? Buzz
Matt Laur
17-55/2.8, or the 70-200/2.8 would really step things up for you. Well, they would cost a lot, too. Do you see yourself moving to an FX-format sensor any time in the intermmediate future? If you DO get into higher quality, faster lenses, your future with sensor sizes would drive some of the thinking. If you're getting into weddings, you also need to have a second body, so it's a good time to think that through.
dcraton
What Matt said totally and if you are going to really shoot outdoor nature scenes, you will probably need a super tele of at least 300mm + a TC (budget) or a 400mm or better. Here is a 300mm/4 with a 2x TC (Kenko) at about 150 yards away: http://www.davidcraton.com/portfolio/Nature/slides/bird2.html. Yet, here is a shot with a Sigma 10-20mm that sold to a regional periodical: http://www.davidcraton.com/portfolio/new/pages/calm2.htm. So, landscape/nature photography 10mm to 600mm and a monopod. Weddings: You will need another cam bod and backup lenses. If you mess up the event of a lifetime. . .you will pay far more than investing in gear. Good luck. Lot's of advice will come you way on this one. Also, you may want to go to the learning section here and read up a a bit.
Rich B NYC
You seem to be doing fine with what you have, although it's hard to tell from the small file size. In any event, the focal lengths that you have can be used for pretty much anything. If you're looking for higher quality/faster optics, what Matt suggests would certainly work. I'd also consider a 24-70 f2.8 instead of a 17-55 if you're thinking of going FX any time soon. Expensive stuff, but worth every cent.
dcraton
200mm is a bit short for anything outside, even on a DX format. It's also short for fashion photography if you are really going the full boat. The lenses he has listed are nice, but not pro. Too slow, There is simply not one lens that will provide the OP with pro work and one bod will certainly not suffice.
buzz_meade
I actually am going to upgrade - I like the new D300 + 18-200VR deal they have going and I feel like the D80 could be holding me back.
buzz_meade
Or am I incorrect in that? Is better lens' the answer and not a better body?
