don_cooper
You don't need to use a DX lens but if you want autofocus you do need an AFS lens, which this lens is not. The D40x requires an AFS lens (focusing motor in the lens) to acquire autofocus.
dcphotography
I've heard that lens is horrible, full chromatic aberration. If you haven't bought it yet, I recommend the 70-300mm AF-S VR lens. Its around 500-600 dollars, USD.
chansonbleu
I bought one for my D70 a couple of years ago. Its a focal length I don't use very often. As I recall it cost about $110. used from KEH. Its feels like a cheap toy, but with care it delivers good images. Not autofocusing on your D40X would be a deal breaker for me.<div></div>
elliot1
The 55-200 AF-S lens would be a much better choice for your camera. It gives beautiful pictures and will autofocus on your camera. It is available with or without VR.
shuo_zhao
The 55-200 AF-S VR is a better choice, it has VR and it has AF on the D40x. If you need the 300mm reach, try the 70-300 4.5-5.6 VR. That lens cost about $460.
