K10D v. Nikon D1x

I know this is a stupid question, but I just got a Nikon D1x which I plan on reselling, but since I have it, is

it a better camera than the K10D (which is still on its way). What's the difference. I didn't post this in

Nikon because I'm pro Pentax and want to know what you guys think.

Thanks!

Well, if you actually want an unbiased opinion, you should probably not ask us :-P

But the K10D is almost certainly better in terms of image quality. The D1x is older and lower-resolution... only 5 megapixels. The K10D also offers in-body stabilization, dust reduction, lighter weight, and a sealed body.

I had a D1x before buying a K10D. The D1x is better built and focuses faster, especially when photographing moving objects. It also has a sync terminal that I miss and it syncs with all strobes up to 1/500 of a second. When properly exposed the D1xs jpg output is unrivaled even by the best of todays cameras. The K10D is smaller, has a much better metering and flash system, higher resolution, SR, longer battery life, and a better LCD.

Todd gives a balanced assessment based on personal experience. You can't get better advice. The D1x was designed with speed shooting of JPEG very much in mind.

For general use, the K10D. Its marvelous Pentax Hyper Manual and Hyper program system must be mentioned. It offers the fastest, most efficient operation of any. Check with me or the PZ-1p owners' manual re remarkable fast tandem adjustments in manual mode. A built in flash can be handy at times too.

On the downside with the D1X is it is very hard on batteries and seems to grow its own dust. Where I used to work we had three of them and they were replaced with 2 D2X and 1 D200 and the dust problem went away.

The K10D is very light on batteries and a lighter camera as well. The dust problem was the worse thing about this camera, we worked in areas that were dustier than normal but the new Nikons did not have the same problem, went from cleaning the sensor at least twice a week to trying to remember the last time it was cleaned.

Thanks for the input. I did some test shots with the D1x and I must say that I am very

impressed. Definitely seems to have a bit more pop in the photos than the Olympus Stylus

830 that I currently use. I was toying with keeping one of the two D1x's I got off e-bay, but

based on your input, I'll sell them both and see if I can get enough to finance the jump to the

K20D.

When I interned with Miss Universe, the lead photogs had recently traded their F4's for

N90's...

At the time, the F4 was considered to be the 'best' 35mm body on the market, but the N90's

fit the need 'better' than the F4's.

'Better' is quite subjective...

Justin must have taken a week off to walk the dog.

Anyways, Justin, pentax forum guru, added a D1H Nikon dslr to his K10D for his sports capture and strobbist needs.

I'm sure he'd rattle off a couple dozen reasons why he owns two brand systems now but one reason I can think of is used nikon pro glass is easy to come by and compared to most older pentax its very affordable.

I buy certain Nikon lenses for my Eos system. Been using nikon glass for over 10 years with my Canons. One of these days maybe I'll buy a nikon body but the $10 adapters I use continue to make more sense to me. My most recent purchase, a 300mm 2.8 ED ran me less than 1/2 a 300mm 2.8 SMC-A ebays for.
