jonathan_hillhouse
Hi all, I recently bought a CZJ MC Sonnar 180mm f/2.8 lens. There is a little switch on the lens with the marks "A" and "M", I'm guessing auto and manual. Does anyone know how this switch affects the operation of the lens? Also, DOF preview on the Kiev 60 doesn't seem to work with this lens. Has anyone else had the same problem? Thanks!
JDMvW
The Auto and Manual refer to the diaphragm operation. Manual is stop down.
jonathan_hillhouse
Hi there, I have worked out that it operates the diagraphm. Looking at it, it seems that I would always use Auto mode. In what circumstances would one use Manual mode? Thank you.
JDMvW
You would use manual mode when you are shooting on a camera that doesn't have the lever to trip the diaphragm, or when shooting with an adapter on, say, a Canon 20D.
johan_de_groote
You use it for stop-down metering or when you put it on a Pentacon 6. The pentacon 6 doesn't have a dof lever.
JDMvW
Pentacon 6TL has automatic diaphragm, the dof 'lever' is on the lens, not the camera.
johan_de_groote
There isn't a dof lever on the MC 180/2.8, the whole black edition. I checked mine before replying... The dof lever of my Kiev works more or less with this lens. Only the diaphragm doesn't completely returns to full open after you tried it. I have to turn it to 2.8 and then it stays open. But it isn't the only lens that does this on my Kiev so I guess it is a kiev problem rather than a lens problem.
JDMvW
Well, mine has a dof lever, but no A/M switch. It varied over time, of course.
johan_de_groote
LOL Apparently the great egalitarian movement of communism didn't extend to lenses...
JDMvW
Ah, but under capitalism, man exploits man. Under communism, it was the other way around.
