M6 with Summicron C

The man that I bought my Leica M4-2, used the camera with a Summicron C

1:2/40mm, that is for the Leica CL. He says me that he likes this combination.

I've ever used the M4-2 and M6 with an Summicron 1:2/50mm and never with

the "C" 40mm. Any body use this lense with a Leica M (no CL)?

Yes, but more than a decade ago, so my memory of it is distant. Not sure even what

frameline it brought up on the M4-2, but I used the 35mm frameline as an

aproximate view. The Summicron 40 seemed to focus OK, but bear in mind that it has

a different cam than the M lenses. Apparently it moves over a shorter distance than

the M lens cams, but nonetheless has the same offset as the M lenses for the same RF

distance. However it may not focus as precisely as an M lens on your M body.

This would probably only be an issue at widest apertures Others may know a lot

more about this than I do.

I use my 40mm summicron C as my everyday, take anywhere, just going for a walk lens on

my M6 and M5.

As others have said its a great lens, small, compact, sharp with a classic look to it.

I've never seen a 50mm summicron that's worth using for the same price. There are

instructions on line with photos that show how to modify it for 35mm framelines, which is

very simple.

I also modified the retaining ring from a torn original rubber hood to use a rectangular

hood from a 35mm summicron.

cameraquest.com sells metal replacements for the 40 C. It's a wonderful lens I use on my M6 all the time. On the Bessas you can set the frame to 35mm and you're all set; on the Leicas you get used to seeing 40mm FOV in 50mm lines. You know you can go a little tighter if you have to, just a bit beyond the 50mm lines.
