chris_whatever
Anyone know what older lenses can be used with the D40 ? The manual is quite confusing.
Peter_in_PA
Almost any Nikkor F-mount lens can be used with the D4. AFS lenses will meter and autofocus. You can use all camera functions. AF lenses (NON-AFS) will meter but not auto-focus. You have to focus, but you can use all exposure modes. AI and AI-s lenses (and even non-AI lenses apparently) will not meter or auto-focus, but will mount and function in manual exposure mode only. You have to guess exposure or use an exposure meter. It's that simple.

mark_sirota1
Any of them, except the IX and pre-AI lenses (which means, roughly, you can use anything made since 1977). With an AF-S lens, you'll get full metering and autofocus. With a non AF-S type G or type D lens, you'll get full metering but no autofocus. With an AF (not D or G) lens or an AI=P, you'll get metering (but not 3D color matrix metering), and no autofocus. With other (non-CPU) AI or AI-S lenses, you'll get no metering and no autofocus. IX lenses and non-AI lenses cannot be used.
mark_sirota1
I guess I could be wrong about the pre-AI lenses. I assumed they couldn't be mounted, but have not confirmed.
photo5
I mounted a pre-AI 28mm f3.5 lens on a D40 and shot a few.
alan_olander1664878205
Pre-AI can be mounted and used without problems. There are no meter tabs or minimum aperture sensor tabs on the D40(x) that interfere.
manh_le
Check out Thom's web site on D40 lenses here: http://bythom.com/lensacronyms.htm Hope this helps.
eric_mudama1
Pre-AI works fine, I mount a 135 f/2.8 on my D40x all the time, the conflicting part would be the minimum aperture ring, which a D40x doesn't have.
