dan_hall4
From what I have read just recently, sounds like you can use a regular CP. I had been reading up on the subject trying to pick out the best CP for my Canon 10-22 and choose the Hoya DMC Pro 1 77mm slim. I like it because I can put the lens cap on the front. Many slim models don't allow this. There is lots of info in old post. Use the search box in upper right. Here is one such link that is relevant to what you are trying to figure out. http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00KnXG
jimstrutz
Nope, you don't need a slim CP filter for the Canon 17-55 f/2.8. But you might want one anyway if you think you might get another 77mm lens in the future that may need it.
dogbert
Yes the Hoya DMC Pro 1 is very slim, but has front threads allowing you to use a standard lens cap. I have one as well as a regular Hoya HMC one. To be honest the regular HMC one is a bit easier to grip and less prone to my fingers slipping and smearing the glass, but the DMC Pro 1 is the way to go if you are worried about vignetting - not an issue with the 17-55 but could be with the 10-22 if you ever get it. PuppyDigs
I use the standard Hoya C-Pol on my 17-55 and it works great. No vignetting unless you stack. Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see. - Robert Hunter
ray_tribendis
When I purchased my EF-S 17-55 I also bought the Hoya HOFIK77 77 mm Introductory Filter Kit" from B&H. VERY happy with the kit...and the lens Ray
