enriquegonzales
I'll be buying my Gitzo GT2530 legs this week, while I wait anxiously for my RSSBH-40 to arrive. I can't possibly leave my fancy new legs unused so I'mwondering, is it physically possible to attach my Nikon D80 directly to thelegs? And if so, is it advisable? Really just a short term solution to satisfymy curiosity until the ballhead arrives.
Hector Javkin
Your Gitzo should have a reversible stud for attaching the head. One end is 1/4", the same size as your camera. It's possible, however, that the thread might be longer than the tripod socket on your D80, so you may drive through the bottom of the D80, causing a very expensive repair. I wouldn't try it. Tripods and heads are just tools for holding your camera. You'll see that after you have them both for a few days.
bwcombs
I agree with Hector. Use your head. Literally.
ben__evans
I've screwed a quick-release plate direct to a spare tripod to suit my hasselblad - Not so fast to get it in the right direction, but in my mind, it cuts out the extra height and potential instability of a ballhead. Of course, if you're going for a top level ballhead, then this won't apply. I'd just wait if I were you!
