paul_viapiano
I was wondering what users are thinking about this combination? I just purchased my first M body, an M2 in great shape and am looking for a lens, most likely a 50mm. Thinking about a 50mm/2 Summicron or possibly the Zeiss ZM 50mm/2 Planar... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...thanks!
john_gleason1
No reason not to consider a ZM lens on an M body. They're terrific lenses!
If I had an M2 body, I'd think about the ZM Biogon 35 --- one very nice lens.
michael_a._shapiro
I really like my 50/2 Zeiss. BUT, since I don't use that focal length much, it's for sale, so if you decide you want one, let me know. Mine is chrome. Good luck. Aoresteen
I have an M4-P. I bought the ZM Planar for it and I love it. Go buy a ZM lens!
ronald_moravec1
Never heard anybody not liking the ZM lenses. I have used a few older Zeiss and find them very nice like all German lenses. I have also heard used Leica glass is in short supply plus the affordable stuff is old, and generally not in good shape.
marek_fogiel
If you want a modern, sharp, flare free lens with a great image plasticity and good bokeh, Planar is hard to beat, and it is very competitively priced. Older Leica lenses are sometimes preferred for softer, more "retro" looking shots, but that's a different story.
don dudenbostel
I sold my 50 summicron when I purchsed my Planar. The planar is absolutely tops in the 50 range. For that matter my experience with the 25 and 35 Biogons are the equal to the Planar. No experience with the others but from what I've read all the Zeiss lenses are first rate. I've used my Zeiss glass along side my current leica asph glass and like the Zeiss best. All work fine on my old and new bodies.
35mmdelux
the Zeiss lens have that, well, zeiss look. a bit diff than the Leica look but equally outstanding. Erwin Putts rates some ZM lens equal to the pre-asph and a few the equivalent of the aspherical models. Here, we are looking at the top-tier of lenses, you cannot go wrong with ZM ...saving a bunch of schilling in the process.
harvey_edelstein1
I was thinking of answering the question but I got hung up on whether the Leica M4P is old enough to be an older body. I know I was in college when I bought it new and that was a while back.

christian_seebode
Without wanting to hijack this thread, I am wondering if it is possible to work with the Biogon 35 using the existing framelines?
dougmiles
"I am wondering if it is possible to work with the Biogon 35 using the existing framelines?" Christian, the answer is so clearly "yes" that I wonder if I misunderstand your words. The Zeiss Biogon-ZM triggers the 35mm framelines in viewfinders in all M-mount camera bodies that have 35mm framelines, just as other M-mount 35mm lenses do. christian_seebode
The Planar is an excellent choice. I was considering it for my M3. If I only had the money ... (kids, college etc.). However, compared to the Summicron, its image has got the reputation of being rather crisp. Christian
