D40 or D40X?

Setting aside the price difference, would anyone choose a D40 over a D40X?

 

(1) I don't think the flash sync is a huge deal; I've managed with slow flash

sync for years and (despite Ken Rockwell's evangelicalism) never missed the

higher sync speeds.

 

(2) From what I've read, at high ISO's the D40X does have more noise than the

D40, per pixel, but it evens out because the D40X has more pixels. At low ISOs

D40X is fine.

6MP is what you need for 8x10. To put more on the sensor means they are smaller and

more noise prone.

 

On the other hand, I would not want the provided /bundled kit lens. That is the weak link.

 

I would get the D40X and the 18/70 if you can`t wait or the D80 replacement with rumored

Can't really wait (and I like the size of the D40/X more than the D80); plan is to use the kit lens as well as 17-35 (my only AFS lens).

 

How easy is it to focus a 50mm AF? Is there an indicator light to help?

I say D40. The D40 has great image quality and is well worth the money. If you think you

need more pixels, get the D80.

D80 is too big for my purposes. D40/X are the perfect size. Only question is whether I fork over $140 more for the D40X so as to avoid having pixel-regret.

If you have the 17-35, get the D40x and a hand strap for it. D40x, in my hands, does well at high ISO (see for a shot at ISO1600:

BTW, the 18-55 kit lens is marginally better with the D40x. Ronald, I think, has no experience.

 

Don't bother with the D40.

The D40x does have a focus indicator light. I have had no problem focusing with an ancient 50mm f/1.4 non-AI.

The D40 is fine - 6Mp is good up to 12x18 with a good picture.<p>

I had a D40 and a D40x, both fine cameras, but I don't shoot at high ISO.<p>

The 50mm AF-D lens works great; you focus manually and there is a focus indicator in the display.

Your going to get as many opinions as there are people here and all will conflict.

 

For me:

I prefer the smaller file size and better ISO performance of the 40. I rarely crop heavy almost never print above 8x10(which is still reasonable for 6M sensor).

 

Only you can decide if you need the extra couple inches of print or a bit more room for cropping.

I'd get the D40 and spend the savings on glass.

As you know the d40x has a 10 megapixel so if you do not have a high power zoom range you will be able to crop your pictures more than if you had a d40. But if you buy the d40 you could spend the extra money for the 55-200mm with VR

I read cropping in the D40X, had the photographers forgot about proper framing and composition?I know, I know that in some fast shots is impossible, but we shouln't relay in the post processing in order to fix mistakes like the use of a proper and capable lens.
