david_jenkins5
Hi All, I have been reading through all the past posts regarding wide lenses and am trying to establish a definitive answer for my Fotoman 6x17cm before I lose my sanity! The most popular wide angle focal lengths for 6x17 are 72mm then the 90mm. Im currently using an older 90mm f5.6 Super-Angulon which is great in the centre but sharpness drops off towards the edges. I have therefore decided to replace this lens with a Schneider 110mm/5.6 Super-Symmar XL. As the 110 is a bit longer I have been considering something in the 70 to 80mm range. The main contenders are: Schneider 72mm f5.6 Super-Angulon XL Schneider 80mm/4.5 Super Symmar XL I am seriously considering the 80mm SS XL as it is smaller and lighter than the monster 72SA and shares the same centre filter with the 110mm. Schneider?s literature says that the 80 will cover 5x7 with no movements which is fine for the 6x17. Love to hear the experiences from anyone shooting with the 80mm SS XL, particular on 5x7 or 6x17. Thanks, David
brucecahn
David: Get the 72 or better yet the 75mm Rodenstock f4.5. The 80 is not as good as they are.
paul.droluk
The 72XL exhibits a fairly large amount of field curvature. As a result, on 617 format, calibrating the helical focus mount can be a bit tricky. If you calibrate at the center of the image, the edges will not be in focus... even @ f32. Calibrating at the edge of the frame gives the opposite result. With some trial and error you can eventually get a solid calibration that gives edge to edge sharpness @ f22, but it can be a bit frustrating. jeff_plomley1
I'll second the Rodenstock 75/4.5 Grandagon-N. Absolutely crisp edge to edge. Diffraction limited though past f/32.
