trevor_newman1
So I tried to crimp the little plate that goes on top of the hot shoe of my F5 but it went terribly wrong and now the piece is mutilated beyond saving. The closest authorized nikon service center is about 160 miles away so I am thinking of sending it into Nikon USA. Do they take cameras that were bought used? I have no original receipts and not even an original box (I bought it off of KEH) but it still has the Nikon USA sticker on it so I know it is a USA model. Would sending it to KEH for a repair be worth it? If I can send it to Nikon USA any estimate on the turn around time for my camera? Thanks so much. Last time I try self repairs for seemingly small tasks...
ShunCheung
As long as your F5 was originally a Nikon USA model, i.e. imported into the US through Nikon USA, they will fix it for a fee. They don't care whether you are the original new owner or you bought it used. Apparently Nikon USA has a master list of serial numbers and hopefully yours is on it. Otherwise, you need to produce a receipt from outside of the US to demonstrate that it was indeed purchased else where. Nikon USA performs free repair estimates but they will charge for return shipping, regardless of whether you choose to have them repair it or not. Typical repair time is 2 to 3 weeks, but that also depends on whether they have the right parts available or not.
photojim
Nikon USA should repair it.
bob_sunley
If you have/had the part off the camera, just order a new one from Nikon.

g._v.
I would send it to Authorized Photo Service before I sent it to Nikon USA. APS is an authorized warranty repair center. There is a toll-free number on their Web site and they provide estimates over the phone. Great service and fast too.
