jean_hee_lee
Hi, I have a Contax T which I would like to take on my next trip in about week, but the foam strips inside (where the film goes) have turned to sticky goo. Is anyone familiar with this camera - is it possible to clean out the foam and not have to replace it, or how should I go about finding/installing the foam? Thanks! mervyn_wilmington
I'm not familiar with the particular camera, but I assume the strips are for light sealing purposes. Such foam is available from specialist camera restorers, etc. The more difficult task can be removing the goo and residue. In the UK there is a liquid called Sticky Stuff Remover. I've used it many times to remove old adhesives of this kind, on many surfaces - always with success. It is matter of carefully scraping away the bulk of the material. The Remover will then soften the remaining traces, and it comes away quite easily. I've never known it take more than a few minutes. I've never needed to use it for a camera, and obviously care would be needed not to get it into the shutter blades etc. It is not corrosive, however. evan_goulet
go to eBay, and search for seller "interslice" - He sells light seal replacement kits for all cameras, with detailed instructions, and a bamboo tool for $12 shipped. There's enough in each kit to do several cameras. I think he recommends naphtha to clean the residue.
ronald_moravec1
Cut a round toothpick on a diagonal and scrape off the old stuff. Naptha or Goo Gone to clean off the last residue. Naptha vapor is highly flamable. Work outside with this or under a hood. Micro tools sells sheets of foam seal. Cut with a a razor knife to size. bob_sunley
A fume hood for a few drops of naptha, being a little paranoid aren't you. Goo Gone has a flash point of 56C, so keep it away from ignition sources as well. :) Also a bottle of Ronsonol lighter fluid which is naptha, works very well for goo removal. Depending on the type of adhesive, isopropyl alcohol may be needed as well.
g-man1
I recommend "interslice," too.
jean_hee_lee
Thanks for the quick answers! I will look up "interslice" as I am limited by not having a car to find foam and whatnot myself...I hope I can get this ready for next week! adrian bastin
Jean, the foam strips in my Contax T are not light seals but more to stop the film cassette from rattling. So they are not essential.
