ed_tobin
Hi, I am in Japan and will find my self in Kyoto on Saturday from 9am to 8pm. From the research that I have done it appears that Kyoto is larger than I thought and I could waste all my time just going between all of the sites. I would like to photograph life there. Any suggestions on the best one or two areas where I could spend my time just wandering around that would provide some photo opportunities. Since this is a busienss trip I packed light and brought a 70-200mm and a 35mm Thanks--Ed
ci_p
Golden pavilion, silver pavilion, kiomizu temple (in that order) + maybe wander around gion area. You can take public buses from outside the station. Also get the english kyoto bus map which is very handy. Or just outside Kyoto station, you can choose a tour bus which takes you around a few different places.
yann1
I agree with Ci P. Of course I'd advise you to stay, at least, one more day. Nanzen-ji temple, is a nice place. Nara is the place to go if you have only one day.
Jerry_
If you are lucky, the city has a street market on some weekends. You might check the Japan Travel Bureau website [it is in English] for more info.
amy_wilson
Hi Ed, -the Golden Pavilion in the morning - Nijo-Jo Castle in the afternoon (must make reservation and dont forget your passport); you maybe able to catch the fall colors there early Nov, -Gion before sunset, you can catch some Geishas on their way to work -Kiomizu around sunset to early evening. Very lively road up to this wonderful temple after sunset. Lots of fun places to eat. I would bring a lens wider than 35mm too (esp. if crop factor). Lots of buildings are small and space is very limited for one to step away from subjects. Cheers Have fun.
berg_na
The itinerary suggested here worked well for me, but these are popular tourist places, so you may not get a feel of 'normal' life in Kyoto. The web site has good descriptions of other areas in Kyoto that may better fit what you're looking for.
ed_tobin
Thank you everyone for the input I following ci p suggestions. Clearly one days was too rushed but at least I know that I would like to visit in the future and spend about 4 days. I was lucky to see a few real geisha's in Gion as they were stepping out of their homes in the evening. Thanks--Ed
