tim gavin
I am planning a four to five day trip to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park the 19-23 of August. Having never been there I was wondering if anyone could give me tips on photo locations within an hour or two of there. I enjoy landscape/seascape photography, some macro and some wildlife. I would really like to get some nice shots of sea stacks, roosevelt elk, long exposure beach shots etc. This will be a scouting trip for another trip in early May 2008. I understand August may not be optimum but I am bringing the family. I will stay at PCRSP as my base camp. Equip: Canon F1N, 24mm, 28mm, 50mm, 70-210mm, 2x tc, ext tube, Tripod, 2 stop GND,and warm. polar. Thanks in advance for any input.
sandysocks
Get up to Samuel Boardman State Park in Oregon for Seastacks. That's a nice campground. Good luck with the clouds and fog. You can basically drive or walk to Fern Canyon. There are some other State parks in your range that are good. Petrolia is an odd drive with an excellent trail at the mouth of the Mattole River. The Trinity Alps might be in reach, but difficult with a family.

davidschindlerphotography
I agree about Fern Cyn. Also,if your lucky there might be a small herd of male Roosevelt Elk in the meadows just before Fern Cyn near the coast.Be aware of Mountain Lions...a man was attacked and killed earlier this year...dont let the kids wander.Enjoy...it's a beautiful park.
