mark u
I'm sure this leak will spread fast - based on a now taken down thread on a Korean forum, which included the images you can see here: http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/Canon_40D.html The original images were made by an H20 Phase One back shot at 50ISO on 12th June according to the EXIF I was able to read in the original posting. Specification details seem rather harder to come by, although some things can be deduced from the released images.

j_smith6
Here are some more pitures:
j_smith6
BTW - what for would it need a partial metering mode if it has a spot meter?
mars c
Ok, you can call me gullible :) , But it looks real to me.
robin_sibson1
Either these are real, or they are a totally different class of fake from anything alse that has appeared. Assuming they are real, there's a few nice but unsurprising things (3" LCD, bright metal hotshoe, SRAW, three C settings on the mode dial, ISO in the finder - hope it's now bright enough to read) but also a couple of surprises. It looks as if there's a third right-thumb button, perhaps as on the 1DIII. And what's the button next to the on/off switch for? A dedicated Live View button, perhaps? The symbol doesn't look familiar.
borek_lupomesky
<P><EM>Ok, you can call me gullible :) but it looks real to me.</EM></P> It looks real and also quite unexciting. Those user settings would be useful, though.
steve_dunn2
<cite>BTW - what for would it need a partial metering mode if it has a spot meter?</cite> <p>Whether it's needed or not, it would be far from the first EOS SLR to have both spot and partial metering.</p>
danield
It's interesting also that all buttons from the right-hand side have been moved to the bottom of the (larger) screen, quite 1D-III-like. A bit uncomfortable for one's chimping thumb if you ask me but YMMV.
danield
Sorry, that should have been left-hand side (the play, delete, jump, etc buttons next to the screen)
j_smith6
No "Direct print" button! I thought that EOS 40D will have 2 :)
mars c
Is the lens it's wearing, the efs 17-85 IS, or a new one? Does it look like the efs 17-85 IS to you? Cause I think the lens in the photo, looks shorter than the efs 17-85 IS, I dont have the efs 17-85 IS though, So I cant quite recognize it on a photo. mike_stemberg
A modified 18-55mm?
sidaths
I have a 17-85 IS and this looks a lot like it.
e_s1
The lens apparently has USM, which could be the micro-motor type, if it's indeed the 18-55. The symbol for the button next to the on/off switch seems to be the one for picture styles.
sidaths
Is it just me or does this camera look quite small? I only have a 350D and when I have my 17-85 mounted on it the ratio of camera width to lens length looks very similar to the top-down photo. This might be why the viewfinder and LCD look unusually large. The camera still does have a top LCD paned though, so I might well be imagining things. jason_hall4
That is the picture styles ICON. See this picture from the Canon web site
robin_sibson1
The lens is clearly marked "IMAGE" and has a just-visible stabiliser on/off switch, so it's either the existing 17~85 or some new EF-S 17-XX IS USM lens. Looks just the size of an XXD body to me. There appears to be some sort of switch under the mode dial on the outboard side. The two partly-visible top left buttons are presumably MENU and PRINT. robin_sibson1
Thanks, Jason, I think it is picture styles. Another waste of space.
jason_hall4
Yes it is a waste.
mark u
The way to estimate the size is to measure relative to the hotshoe pin spacing which is reasonably guaranteed to be the same as on other models.
wandern
If only they'd make the hardware buttons programmable, it wouldn't be as objectionable. Do I see a dedicated focus button on the back (or rather the addition of a dedicated FEL button, perhaps, so that functionality isn't lost with CF4-1?) mark u
The top plate ISO indicator is marked as A888. Some speculate this implies a settable auto ISO mode (possibly available in M mode only), and perhaps no 3200 ISO as standard.
wandern
As long as we're speculating baselessly, we could just as well assume the annunciator reads "HI" for ISO 3200. Or the emulated graphic is wrong. Or...
zackojones
The sRAW image size looks interesting. Do any of the other Canon cameras have that as an option?
