Well France are one down 5 mintues into the second half. And I can't

recall a single european team winning the world cup ouside of europe

but might be wrong.

My bet is Argentina with spain as outsiders.

No matter what its going to be the best month of tele this year.

And please note to everyone its FOOTBALL not SOCCER. As is shown by

the governing bodies FIFA, UEFA, FA, etc.

Actually 'Soccer' is an English term. It derived in the late 1800' in

public schools (private to everybody else) and comes the habit to

make silly short names for things

ie. Rugby Football became Rugger and Association Football (the Proper

name) became Soccer. The pupils of these schools went on to rule the

empire and took that stupid name with them. Thats why the world calls

it Soccer and the British don't!

My problem with what we call soccer and you call football is that

it doesn't take any athletic ability. I know this for a fact because I

was very good at it and I have no athletic ability.

Rugby is a different matter. My experience with Rugby comes

from watching a club team at one of the universities. The

members were mostly from NZ, OZ or SA. I could never qualify

since my knuckles don't drag the ground when I walk. Anything

important to you that I haven't insulted.

This post has been provided as a service. Since Phil isn't

posting here much anymore, it is up to us to take up the slack.

Now, I have done my part; someone else will have to do it the

next time. If we band together we can recapture the aura that was

Phil. ;<)

Football (soccer) requires one to run (twice) for 45 minutes without

a break. The only American sportsmen who could accomplish this would

be basketball and ice hockey players. Baseball and most gridiron

players (excepting wide receivers) would die from heart attacks,

since most "plays" in these sports last less than ten seconds at a

time. (As it is, most gridiron lineman have a short lifespans due to

their excessive weight and use of steroids.)

Definitions:

Soccer: A game for gentlemen played by hooligans.

Rugby: A game for hooligans played by gentlemen.

Anyone who's been through the mideival English educational system

loves rugby, especially coed rugby. :)

Art,

Sorry, I didn't wear a helmet (not allowed) while playing too much

rugby! That silly gizmo to protect the ears doesn't work.

Ever heard a Swiss announcer pronounce Soccer? It sounded like

Sausaire.

Wait a minute, people. Nobody, but nobody (not even the Swiss, Vikram) in Europe, and, I

believe in most countries in the world, call football soccer. IMO, only in America do they call it

that, to differentiate it from American football, which, as you all know, is played almost

exclusively in America. Heck, in many latin countries I think they even call it something like

"futbol". And BTW, Vikram, I doubt ice hockey players could play football. They would have to

exert themselves for much longer than two minutes at a time. No rest on the bench in football.

No protection worth mentioning either. This from a French-born guy who played "football"

throughout his childhood and teen years and now lives in Montreal. And, FWB, maybe

France-Portugal in the final, but one thing for sure: France will retain the cup. Ahem... I think. ;-)
