Auto focus has died any ideas on what the cause is?

I was on vacation last week and was shooting family photos at the beach when

the autos focus quite working on my canon 10d. All it does is hunt back and

forth with out locking on to anything. I tried changing lens cleaning the

connections and resetting the camera but it still won?t focus. Anybody got any

ideas on what might have caused this and what to do to fix it.

Thanks Kenny

It could be that the secondary mirror behind the main mirror has come adrift. The secondary mirror reflects light that has passed through the semi silvered central portion of the main mirror onto the focus sensors in the floor of the mirror box.

The hinges on the secondary mirror sometimes fail, or the mechanism that folds it out of the way when the main mirror flips up has failed.

Gently lift the main mirror and observe the secondary mirror mounted on the rear side.

Hope this helps.

Ken- I am having the same difficulty with my fixed 50mm in both autofocus and manual modes using the 20D and 5D. Your complaints are the same as mine. It took me a long time to realize that it was the camera that just won't lock into a focus mode. A few times I can get it in focus but it is a struggle! I plan to send it back to canon on Monday. Let you know what the service center says.
