fastshutter
I was on vacation last week and was shooting family photos at the beach when the autos focus quite working on my canon 10d. All it does is hunt back and forth with out locking on to anything. I tried changing lens cleaning the connections and resetting the camera but it still won?t focus. Anybody got any ideas on what might have caused this and what to do to fix it. Thanks Kenny
walang_pangalan
As you've exhausted your options, it's time to take it in to Canon.
HenryUK
It could be that the secondary mirror behind the main mirror has come adrift. The secondary mirror reflects light that has passed through the semi silvered central portion of the main mirror onto the focus sensors in the floor of the mirror box. The hinges on the secondary mirror sometimes fail, or the mechanism that folds it out of the way when the main mirror flips up has failed. Gently lift the main mirror and observe the secondary mirror mounted on the rear side. Hope this helps. Henry
zackojones
You didn't say what lens you're using but is there any chance it could have gotten switched to MF mode or perhaps stuck between MF and AF modes?
fastshutter
hey Zack I wish it was just that but that was the frst thing I checked.
bill.akstens
A piece of dirt or hair laying across one of the AF sensor openings inside the mirror box? Does it have this problem with all the focus sensors or just one?
fastshutter
No it is all of the sensors, also the green focus light in the view finder blinks dont know what that means. also the little mirror seems to work fine. thanks for your help
fastshutter
Also i just notice that it will every so often auto focus in real bright lighting with lots of contrast. it is almost like shooting in low light where it can't find a lock
www.littlefootprintphoto.c
Ken- I am having the same difficulty with my fixed 50mm in both autofocus and manual modes using the 20D and 5D. Your complaints are the same as mine. It took me a long time to realize that it was the camera that just won't lock into a focus mode. A few times I can get it in focus but it is a struggle! I plan to send it back to canon on Monday. Let you know what the service center says.
