cliff_estes
I have a 80-400mm VR and I can't seem to find the serial number (needed by my insurance co). I know it's on the lens, since I had it in for repair and the guy at the shop recorded it, but I don't have access to the repair slip, so I need to find the number on the lens. Anybody got one where they can locate the number and tell me where they found it? Thanks.
ShunCheung
I don't have that particular lens, but on most Nikon AF lenses with an aperture ring, it is on the aperture ring, on the side opposite from (i.e. 180 degrees from) where the f5.6 marking is. liljuddakalilknyttphotogra
It was much easier in the "good old days" when the serial numbers were printed in white on the front of the lens. Now they seem to be located on the aperture ring at 180 degrees & are printed in a brownish gray (I think it is). A lot harder to locate & see. All my newer lenses have it there. ShunCheung
Lil, I think the whole point is to make the serial number harder to see so that other people cannot pick it up easily. You don't want someone who wants to create problems to identify your serial number and, for example, report it to some stolen lens registry. Most of us don't post the entire serial number in these forums and in the classifies for the same reason. Instead, we identify serial numbers as e.g. 1234xxxx. ceasley
Cliff: I have the same 80-400mm Nikon lens and I also could not find the serial number, even after reading this thread. Then I looked again, and sure enough, it's there - barely readable opposite side of the apperture ring.
