ddroll
FYI only - On May 2nd, I posted "Banding with 5D" - http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00L08T. Though I don't believe this is the same "banding" problem others have written about, I have since sent in the body to Canon's NJ facility. The charge was $204.00 ($180 labor, tax $9 and shipping $15). They gave the following "Service detail": "We have examined the product according to your request, and, upon close inspection the exact cause could not be identified but it was found that dust became stuck to the image elements. The digital pcp ass'y was replaced. Adjusted c-mos. Adjusted focus and exposure, updated firmware and re-imaged c-mos. Checked, cleaned and adjusted all to factory specs." So I guess the mystery continues as to what caused it, however it appears the camera was fixed. I'm not sure if altitude or ambient temp played a role as the problem pic was taken around 30 degrees and at about 9000'. Hard to duplicate that at 668' and 90 degrees. I guess my reason for this posting share info about a problem I had with the 5D that may help others. I have attached the pic again so if someone has similar problems, they know the remedy. Overall, I was satisfied with Canon's service and still love the 5D.
m_barbu1
My suspicion is that the part that was replaced was the cause. I'm guessing the other steps were either required by replacing that part, or done "just to be sure".
picturesque
What is a pcp assembly?
buck_rogers1
I think it's actually pcb for 'printed circuit board'
William Michael
>> What is a pcp assembly << `Peripheral Control Processor Assembly` or `Peripheral Control Assembler`:usually used to control ES (Embedded Software). I am not stating there is a PCP inside a 5D, merely stating what a `PCP` is: thus `pcp ass`y` could in fact be a typo, as mentioned above. William Michael
>> Um... is there something you need to get off your chest, Mr. W?! << Just Happy :) And I could not resist, innocent enough really. Let me explain: Yet another three letter acronym, which just appealed to a quirky sense of humour. If the Canon work sheet / report did not use acronyms, but described in full what was done / replaced, then we would not be having the discussion about what the pcp is. I realize the point was oblique, but that is it, in a nutshell. Regards WW
shadowcatcher
Sounds like you had a new camera to me. PCP means phencylidine to me as well for what it is worth.
picturesque
Thanks for the answers, everyone. I asked because I also had a pcp assembly replaced on my 20D, and now it seems to work better than before--surer autofocus--but it could just be my imagination or I'm better at autofocusing... ddroll
Thanks all, The explanation from Canon was a cut and paste job. Though it says pcp, they obviously meant pcb or printed circiutboard.
