sunnyindy
Hi, I'm staying in Homer, Alaska for 3 nights at late June. Does anyone know good landscape locations for sunrise and sunset, or anytime? Thank you!
john lehman, college alask
For June 21: Civil Twilight: 3:09am Sunrise: 4:46am Sunset: 11:29pm Civil Twilight: 1:05am In other words, it will be sort of darkish between 1:05am and 3:09am. Either stay on the spit or there are some good overlooks that you can drive to from the main highway. Check _Milepost_ for details.
lancemcvay
The bluffs back towards Ninilchik and Clam Gulch look out over Cook Inlet and are just spectacular. There is a very picturesque Russian Orthodox church on the bluffs above the village of Ninilchik. If you've got a car, I would highly suggest the drive up towards Soldotna from Homer. steve_kaufman
Simply drive up East Hill Road, and look for nice views over town. There should be some nice fields of fireweed if the weather gets warm enough for awhile. Also take a drive up Diamond Ridge Road (can be accessed from East Hill). Don't worry, there aren't many roads; you can't get lost. You might also try East Road (also referred to as East End Road). There are some nice spots with open views of the Bay. If you want to walk off the road, ask permission from property owners; most will be friendly to you.
sunnyindy
Thank you! I'd like to see some of those locations during the days and sunset, but I don't think I can make sunrise. Yes, I'm going to stay near the spit.
larry h.
Up East Hill Road is Carl Winn Nature Center. It is on an 1100' bluff overlooking Kachemak Bay. There are great views of the bay there, as well as great wildflowers. There are also supposed to be lots of moose there, but we didn't see any. Not nature photography related, but make sure you go to the Pratt Museum there as well. It was really good.
