igord
What do deflectors change in the quality of lighting (besides of changing color with gold one)? I woluld like to know before I get them and experiment. Thanks for any info.
martial_baribault1
It automatically soften the light source.
peter_hart
I use these reflectors on my rota-boxes without the front baffles and this is a nice way to build a softer direct light. I haven't done it with gold yet, but I should and will try this one soon! Peter
john_murphy1
Here's a comparison series that may help you decide.

john_murphy1
Incidentally, in the above comparison the term "Beauty Light" refers to any of the large indirect softboxes that Elinchrom makes. Also, the color balance on the silver and gold reflector shots is the same as on the translucent.
igord
Thank you for answers! John, is this open softbox comparison?
john_murphy1
Sorry, I don't understand your question...
If you're asking what I used for the above comparison, it is as follows:
Elinchrom Mini Octa with the various deflectors (and both scrims in place), versus the
Elinchrom Octa Bank
igord
John, I meant if you used diffusion or just soft box with deflectors and no diffusion.
john_murphy1
Gotcha. I always use the diffusion screens (scrims) when using softboxes. I've posted comparisions of this sort of thing before, but I don't know the exact threads.
The deflector helps to even out the light, and while it's mandatory on a beauty dish, you can get away without it on a softbox. (In fact, that's why I bought the deflectors, because I have the Elinchrom Softlite beauty dish). Turns out, the translucent one is the only one I ever use, because in a RAW workflow, the colored reflectors are unnecessary.

igord
Ok, I got the octa today during the model test shoot, I used 2 screens and silver deflector... This light has nice quality, at least for me.

andrew_ross1
How do you find the setup and assembly of the rotalux softboxes? I was talking to someone at my local retailer the other day, and he said they were a pain to put together compared to the Chimera boxes. However, he didn't really seem very familiar with them, so I'm not sure I trust his opinion. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks, Andrew
