randall_pukalo
Vintage ad from December 1979 issue of PopPhoto. Razor Sharp Lens is right!!!
jorgen_udvang
It's an amazing little camera. If it had been launched today, in digital form, few people would have suspected that it was designed 30 years ago. With a lens that gave the same FOV and the same maximum aperture, I would buy one. patrick j dempsey

This has to be my fav XA ad.... I dont know who that guy in the tan shirt is, but solid-gold razor-blade necklace just screams PIMP. This photo says it all... I like to ride my bike down the beach with the salt sea air and sand blowing in my camera... and draining my batteries by leaving my camera on.... so that strange men with WAY too many pockets can ask me where I got my top with 4 straps on it, while touching his crotch. Hmmmm... obviously advertising has nothing to do with this camera being discontinued! ALthough I admit I do wish I had the neck strap... I should just make one! Brian
Great ad Patrick. Those were the days. I believe the man's rather fetching garment used to be called a leisure suit.

Seriously, the XA's were great cameras and deserved better than this.
john_hermanson2
and at that time, leisure suits were the fashion, yuck! John, www.zuiko.com
john falkenstine
Value and class judgements here; many Hispanic males, young and old wear gold necklaces. Pimping has nothing to do with it. Its a cultural thing.
patrick j dempsey
Yeah I realize that these days its common to see people in gold chains.... but a guy on the beach in long pants with a gold RAZOR BLADE necklace gesturing to his crotch while talking to an attractive girl... what the heck where the ad people thinking? Theres another shot in the catalog of the same guy with the same necklace hugging his golden retreiver... it just seems like an odd ad campaign... I guess the XA was supposed to attract the "hip" crowd.
andrew robertson
It's probably a Japanese coin and not a razor blade.
nick_wilson2
Although we would call them 'Safari suits'. Perfect garb for listening to 'Baby elephant walk' while viewing a slide show from snaps from the XA. With a fondue to follow. Such a shame they are out of fashion...As it is for those shorts! Is that surf as serious as it looks??
patrick j dempsey
nick.... while the lighting is very convincing... the surf and the way the beach only appears to be about 2 inches tall makes me think this shot is all studio!
j.k._york
I had an XA (stolen) and a magic 8 ball. Loved the XA, but had mixed results with the magic prognosticator.
alex_kinnan
The pockets are probably for carrying extra rolls of film; the razor blade pendant is to suggest that "Olympus Cuts Through The Crap." The crotch pointing is likely the result of a harried photo editor picking the wrong shot before heading home for the weekend.
