70-200 VR + 18-200 on monopod

I posted a question the other day regarding monopods. I've decided to buy the

Manfrotto 681B. I have an L bracket on my D80 for vertical shots. Do I need

the Manfrotto 3232 swivel head or can I just put an arca swiss clamp directly

atop the monopod? Are there any other functions of the swivel head other than

taking vertical shots? My photography instructor used a swivel head on his

monopod when he was shooting HS football games where he would follow the action

by "panning horizontally downward". I won't be taking action shots like this so

I don't know if I should get the swivel. The monopod supports 26.4 pounds which

is more than enough for me. The swivel head only supports 5.5 pounds. I don't

want the swivel head to be the weakest link especially when I'm going to invest

in a $60 arca swiss clamp from RRS. I shoot sports and action rarely. I just

want the monopod to supplement the VR because the 70-200 and the D80 are a pain

to hold for an extended period of time. You're input is appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

L-Brackets are great I have on most of my cameras. However you don't want to be using the

L-bracket to mount your camera on the monopod if you are using a lens like the 70-200VR.

You want to replace the foot on the 70-200 with a Arca foot, then mount the lens to the

monopod. I know Kirk has a replacement foot (the one I have) and most likely RRS has one

too. I shoot sports (rugby and soccer) with a 70-200VR mounted on my D2X and use a

swivel head with an Arca style clamp mated to it. I've never had any issues with this setup. I

also often use a TC 1.7II with the 70-200VR with this setup.
