roberta_pratt
I was asked to take pictures at a fund raiser for the red cross. I'm no professional, but would like your advice any anything you offer my way. I will be taking pictures of couples, families and who ever else there might be. There will also be 2 Dalmatian dogs posed in the picture. I was wondering about a flash and the eyes of the people and of coarse the dogs. I know that the red eye is always out there and I worry about this part. I have the following lens, 28-300 mm, and the AF-S VR Nikkor 70-200mm 1:28G. If any one of you could guide me through this, and tell me what mode I should shoot these pictures in? I usually use the auto for just about everything I shoot. This is not my area with using the different settings. I hope someone can help out with these few questions. The event is Thursday evening. Thanks so much in advance,Roberta
beauh44
Hi Roberta, Unfortunately I can't help with mode suggestions for your Nikon because I'm a Canon guy, (you also didn't mention which Nikon camera) but don't sweat the red-eye. It's easy to fix in almost any photo editor. I think you'll be fine with auto-focus and wouldn't sweat that either. I suspect there will be some Nikon shooters out there with advice on the flash and modes but you've got great coverage with those two lenses so you can try different camera angles (Maybe get down low to shoot the dogs and/or kids) and with that long, VR zoom, some nice, candid portraits. So try not to worry; have a good time and it'll rub off on others and show in the photos. I'm sure you'll get some nice shots! Oh yeah... pack spare batteries and plenty of CF cards - assuming your digital - film if not. ;-)

kenneth_dougherty
What flash unit?
sandy_dee
Use a bracket or bounce the flash otherwise you will get redye and harsh shadows...esp with the dogs. Also dogs need a longer focal length down at their level or they get distorted....you need at least 80 mm.
