penn10
I have 17-55 f/2.8 on a D50. I have a feeling the lens AF speed is not as fast as I tried one in a local store on a D2X body. I want to confirm that body does affect AF speed, and how so? The motor is in the lens right?
pmarcus
The D2X has more sophisticated AF as well as an additional image processor. Of course it's faster.
juan_parm_nides
Yes, body affects AF speed. The Nikon D2Xs has the Multicam 2000 AF module and it is worlds better that the Nikkon D50 Multicam module. It is faster and acurate. Have you noticed that the Nikon D2X does not need AF assist light to focus in poor light conditions?. Regards.
bruce_rubenstein___nyc
The D2x does not have AF assist light because Nikon does not put them in pro bodies, and not because they don't need them. It is assumed that people using pro bodies will be using external flashes that have AF assist lights (that work better) built into them.
juan_parm_nides
Well, maybe true or not. But my Nikon D2Xs can focus where my wifes D50 can not. Same lens. Regards.
nino
frank, have you noticed the size difference between theses two cameras? The d2x has a larger motor able to draw more power from a larger battery, with more sophisticated focus algorithms. Bear in mind also that 17-55 is also a pro lens, designed primarily to function with pro bodies. It will still work fine with a d50, just not to full capacity. ShunCheung
The 17-55mm/f2.8 is an AF-S lens where the AF is powered by the AF motor inside the lens. So the AF motor in the camera body doesn't matter. However, the D2X's Multi-CAM 2000 is far superior to the Multi-CAM 900 inside the D50.
tonybeach
As has already been inferred here by others, the speed difference is an acquisition issue. One more reason to prefer a D80 or D200 over the D40 or D40x.
mawz
Note that the D80 & D200's Multi-CAM1000 module and the D40 & D40X's Multi-CAM530 module are both variants of the old Multi-CAM900 module (which the D50, D70 and D100 use, along with the F80, F75 and F65). When set to centre-point only (the best performing setting) with an AF-S lens, AF performance will not be all that different (the D80 & D200 will be faster simply due to having more CPU power).
