zach_abubeker
Ive been reading about the screw mount adapters you can purchase for older m42lenses. I have also found a few on ebay. The only problem is i dont want topurchase it from a bad vendor as it may likely damage my camera or even worseget stuck inside of it. Does anyone have any recommendations as far as 3rd partyvendors? And didnt pentax release this directly to the public or am i mistaken? Thanks, Zach
wigwam jones
The "one with the flange thing on it" will not allow infinity focus. Buy a genuine Pentax adapter. Worth every penny. They typically go for about $25-$30 USD on eBay. The third-party adapters as sold by B&H and others LOOK like the Pentax adapters, but they do not work well. I doubt you'd damage your camera, but I have had one get good and stuck, scared the life out of me. I have not had such problems with the genuine Pentax brand adapter. mike_orgill
So...Pentax adapters are not sold new anymore? Only used ones are available?
dave_powell2
You can also buy new adapters at better photo stores (like Hunt's in Melrose, MA), but they aren't Pentax! I got mine there, and it has worked well. It's easy to differentiate between the versions that give you infinity focus and don't...the ones that do have an almost paper-thin ring of metal on the front. craig_howlett
I tried to order a m42 adapter from the Pentax site in Colorado. It didn't go through. A month later I called them and ordered one over the phone, $30 plus shipping. Gave them my credit card number. They said they would send it when they were in stock. It arrived in seven days. That was about two weeks ago.
zach_abubeker
how can i tell if its actually original pentax design? ive seen quite a few models out there. also what exactly is this thin piece of metal?? thanks, zach
ashley_winthrop
Hi,***The thickness or thinness of the top flange of an M42adaptor has no effect on focusing to infinity as long asthe adaptor is flush (thick) or less then flush (thin)in relation to the front face of the camera's lens mountring. This is because the back face of Pentax Takumarscrew mount lenses butt up against the camera's lens mountring, not the adaptor.***I have a genuine Pentax adaptor with the thin top flangeand a Japanese-made copy with the thicker flange. Bothwork perfectly with my Pentax ist DL camera as both, wheninstalled properly, are flush (copy) or less then flush(Pentax) with the camera's lens mount ring.***Improper adaptor installation of the thicker adaptor, allowing it to rise above the camera's lens mount ring, may cause problems but otherwise both adaptors shouldwork.***
zach_abubeker
So in comparison, which of these might be the better choice: http://cgi.ebay.com/M42-SCREW-MOUNT-LENS-TO-PENTAX-K-ADAPTER-MADE-IN-JAPAN_W0QQitemZ260097966748QQcategoryZ30059QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem or http://cgi.ebay.com/Screw-Mount-M42-to-Pentax-PK-Mount-Lens-Camera-Adapter_W0QQitemZ330103975437QQcategoryZ30059QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem Is this the thick and thin piece that you guys are referring to? ashley_winthrop
Hi Zach, *** I don't think thin or thick makes a difference as long as the top surface of the adaptor is flush with or below the surface of the camera's lens mount ring, into which the adaptor fits. I did find, however, that the genuine Pentax adaptor (thin) is easier to install and remove than the copy but I suspect this is only because the copy is new and the Pentax adaptor has been used for years. ***

msgill
Hi Folks: I have D300 with Pentax K mount adapter and M42 Pentax ring. When I use Tomika 55 F 1.2 screw mount auto lens (not having A/M switch like Taks) it works in full aperture opening because the Pentax M42 ring do not have ridge to stop down the lens. Bulk of adapters appearing on e.bay but hesitant to pick up one due to the above reason.. I will appreciate if my colleagues let me know the specific dealer who make M42 adapter to eos with ridge to control the aperture of above lens and camera combination. Thanks in advance. doug_hall
I just bought a K20 to replace my three Spotmatics and in my search to find info about using my old lenses with my K20, I stumbled across this page. Based on the information I read here, I decided to see what I could find in the way of an "original" Pentax adapter ring. I've read here and elsewhere that the real Pentax adapters are difficult to find, but I found brand new Pentax adapters here:
http://www.pentaxwebstore.com/detail/PTX+30120
They're twice the price of the third-party adapters, but given that they are the real thing, I thought the link to them might be of use to others who search for them and stumble across this page.

simon_bygdell
Thanks for posting that link, Doug. I ordered one. Good to know that you can get it directly from Pentax.
