amber_mcgowan
I am using a Nikon D70. For awhile now, I've been getting the error message "CHR" when I put in my Compact Flash card. I was using the SanDisk Ultra II 1.0 GB card. Then it stopped working, and I couldn't reformat it in the camera or in the card reader. I bought a new card, a Kingston 1 GB Compact Flash. Now I am having the same trouble. When I put it in the camera, it reads "CHR." When I try to format in the camera, it refuses to format. When I format it in the card reader (I have tried two different ones, one which is brand new!), it says that it is corrupt and will not let me reformat. I am tired of buying new Compact Flash cards and of my Nikon not working the way it should. I sent the camera in about three months ago for some repairs because it wasn't working properly (not focusing and doing weird stuff). My camera was gone for two months, so I am hesitant to send it back to Nikon. Any suggestions on what I should do or what is causing the problem? Thanks. juanjo_viagran
If you sent the camera to Nikon three months ago you should contact them and ask what they suggest.. maybe you are still under some king of warranty from whatever they done to your camera.. GOOD LUCK.
Peter_in_PA
Time for repair. I've seen this in a limited fashion on the old D1. We didn't get it serviced, because it was replaced with a Kodak DCS 14n (a simply AWFUL, but FF camera)
angkordave
I'd be concerned about the memory cards being corrupted by a virus, infecting the Camera and subesequently infecting the cards. It has happened recently to my cards and proved difficult to resolve. Anyone Else had this problem?
errolyoung
You probably have a bent pin in the CF slot. I bent one first week I had the camera. Nikon wanted $500 for repair. I went to a local camera repair shop. Three years ago and I don't think they ever handeled a DSLR. They bent it back. Now I do not remove the CF card. SD cards do not have this issue. briany
Dave, do you have a link to info about a virus that can infect Nikon DSLR firmware, or are you just speculating?
patrick_viebey___orlando__
Did you try the utility from Sandisk's web site? Format and Read/Write Check Utility http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1354 It seems odd to me that you couldn't even reformat it in a reader. My bet is that the filesystem got messed up in the card somehow. Try using the utility - I don't have a card here, but with a hard drive, we would call it a 'low level reformat'. Worth trying anyways... pat
john_aceti
I got one here that is messed up.
If I put the chip in the camera I can see my photos. If I put the chip in my reader or even in a different reader it looks all Chinese.
Is there a fix for this?
I am going to try using my USB cable to the camera and see what happens

julie_tindel
I believe the "cha" is a recall by nikon.
ShunCheung
Nikon's CHA error typically indicates a memory card failure.

Nikon will repair the so called Blinking Green Light of Death (BGLOD) on the D70 out of warranty. Companies make recalls, i.e. preventive repairs/exchanges even before any symptom appears, mainly because of hazard concerns, such as some of the EN-EL3 batteries overheating issue a few years ago. There are some remote possibility that it may cause fire or burn. Otherwise, they usually wait until there is indeed a problem and will fix it, perhaps out of warranty.
karen_gallagher
My D70 does this regularly with CF cards of 4gb or more. I went back to 1gb cards & the problem does not reoccur. But it's a pain.
vernon_hunt
I tried the SanDisk utility website and it is no longer available. Is there another? Does anybody have an uncorrupted D70s Firmware file. I would like to try reloading the firmware. I have tried using the computer to reformat the CF Cards and then reformatting on my 70s, but still does not work. I have had the same problem with 3 cards: 192mb, 1gb & 4gb, so don't think it's the card size.
Vern
