35mmdelux
Hi - I understand there was a modification to the MPs rear film door from the old M6 style to the newer M7 style. Does anyone know when this occured? Thanks.
raymond_tai
I recall it was pretty much within months the first MP was released. I was at the dealer playing with one the week the MP was released but due to the demand the price was too dear. Once prices came down a bit after several months the new dial appeared. vinay_patel
It was changed when Leica ran down their overstock of the older-style dials (they still had to keep some for repair parts) and replaced it with the new dial which is less costly to manufacture since it shares some components with that of the M7. What some people do not know is that the later dial was also changed slightly after about a year, to make the detents stronger.

furcafe
I did not know about the stronger detents ("clicks"). Pierre, I would think that it is better as it makes it more difficult to accidentally change the ISO.
vinay_patel
Pierre: the new dial when it first appeared had weak detents and the film speed could be inadvertently unintentionally changed. Leica made the detents stronger later on to help prevent that. The older, M6-style dial is least easily disturbed, but it's also a little more finnicky to set in the first place. emanuel_lowi1
Minor bit of trivia: the round space in the M6/early MP dial is exactly the right size for installing the old M back door film type decal (which is metal). I've always thought the backs looked colourless without them, so I install them for looks only -- they serve no function on an M6/MP. The decal cannot fit in the later MP and M7 backs.<div></div>
