melvinbasha
I am not sure if it's the camera, D80, or the lens 18-200 VR, but when I pressthe shutter to auto focus, the lens doesn't move. Is anyone familiar with thisbefore I send it to Nikon? The contacts seem clean, it's almost brand new lens. thanks
russ_konrad
Make sure the "M/A - M" switch on the lens is on the "M/A" setting. On the "M" setting you have to manually focus the lens.
robert_hooper1
Yes, and check to see if the camera body is set to AF as well. Hope the solution really is this simple.
melvinbasha
I think is time for me to go to bed and clear my mind :). It was the camera switch. Thanks Robert and Russ

thierry nguyen cuu - nomad
Another tip: AF assist in low light will only work when your AF is set on S (one shot focusing) and not C (continous focusing) Hope this could help.
bruce_rubenstein
The D80 also has a AF-A mode, and the AF assist light also works in that mode.
frank_skomial
I do not have D80, so my comment is about D200, as the situation could be similar or identical. D200 has a button called AF-ON where you can program this button to cause auto focus action. One of programming options for this button is to disable the focusing ability of the half-press action on the shutter release button. That is in D200 you can disable the shutter release focusing, and it will never cause auto focus to function. In this case you need to press the AF-ON button to auto focus. Deos D80 has AF-ON button ? is Yes, then there could be the reason there?
frank_skomial
Looking at the D80 picture in a newspaper ad, it appears it does not have the AF-ON button. So, perhaps you can dismiss this reason for not auto focusing.
heartyfisher
Glad to hear that it was human error for you.. beckyh
Tze, was your lens not auto-focusing at all, or was it just soft? My 18-200 seems to be soft. I am also using a D70.
heartyfisher
Hello Becky, Yes, and yes! .. It was a bit soft and it stopped auto-focusing. I did some comparisons with the 18-70 Kit lens and its a bit softer than the kit lens but much sharper than my old 28-200 tamron. I find that its worst at teh long end than the short end. but if I am printing teh usual 4x6 or 5x7 prints its fine. However, I have put it in for service.. will report back here when I get it back if you like..
beckyh
Thanks for the info. Mine started to "creep" when on the camera but not in use. This has gotten progressively worse, as has my perception that the autofocus is not as sharp as it once was. I think I'll pursue service as well. ian_harvey
Make sure that you switch off the vR on normal and high shutter speeds as VR takes the edge off of the picture when not needed.
heartyfisher
Hi all.. ldallara
I just got an 18 - 200 VR and it seems to get stuck at times and not-AF, when I switch to another lens and shoot its find so i know its not the body (D200) seem to happen at the long end, changing it to 85mm seem to free it up. Setting it /m and using it as a range finder works ok, so i think its a af-s motor or gear drive. Other than this problem I like the lens, though not as sharp as a 70-200mm f/2.8 I am leaving for a photo shoot Monday and will bring a back 18-70mm. and send it in when I get back. Happy shooting.
