Bronica 80mm PS for SQ - f/stop ring too stiff?

Just a quick question.

 

I just got a 80mm PS lens from ebay. The aperture ring is really stiff. I wonder

if it is normal.

 

The DOF preview level seems to work fine and the iris closes down smoothly and

quickly. No oil on the aperture blade. Shot some polaroid and seems to expose

correctly.

 

I compared the 80mm with my other SQ lenses (150mm S and 50mm S) They are both

quite stiff, but not as much as the 80mm. Are all SQ lenses tend to have stiff

aperture ring?

No. Stiff aperture change is not normal on any lens. I had a similar problem some time ago with an etrs lens (I imagine the construction is similar). It involved a plastic circular cam that was within the aperture ring (it acted to transfer the aperture reading from the aperture ring to the aperture mechanism itself). It had worn, producing difficulty in changing apertures - the shutter fired ok, and the aperture shut down in an exemplary fashion, just the aperture ring was difficult to change. For some time, I made do with f8, till having it replaced.

 

If you got it off eprey, you may well have been dudded - you should consider the appropriate response. Or a repair may be needed.

My PS80 is extremely stiff too. Not the S50 and S150. It doesn't bother me that much, though.

It should not be stiff at all. Firm yes, and certainly not sloppy, but not stiff. Maybe thats why it was for sale. There's enough of these about not to accept anything less than as it was described.

my ps80 is smooth... as is my ps150 lens. I dont have much experience with other lenses but none has ever been stiff.
